No. 36 (Black Stripe)

Artist:Mark Rothko Oil on canvas 157.1 x 170.1 cm 1958
Mark Rothko (American (born Russia, now Latvia), 1903-1970)
As a self-taught artist, Rothko worked in a realistic style before arriving at his distinctive color field paintings in 1949. He is associated with the Abstract Expressionist School in New York, but unlike his contemporaries, his paintings are gesture-less and composed of large floating blocks of pure color.
