Amedeo Modigliani (Italian, 1884-1920) was an Italian Jewish painter and sculptor who worked mainly in France. He is known for portraits and nudes in a modern style characterized by a surreal elongation of faces, necks, and figures. He started by studying painting but was introduced to sculpture upon meeting Constantin Brancusi in Paris in 1909. From 1909 to 1914, he devoted himself mainly to sculpture. Modigliani returned entirely to painting with new eyes in 1915, working in the linear style that he is so well known for today. He died of tubercular meningitis, at the age of 35, in Paris.
