Artist:Kerry James Marshall Acrylic and paper collage on canvas 220.9×276.8 cm
Throughout his artistic career, Marshall has been engaged in an ongoing dialogue with six centuries of representational painting. He is known for his expansive body of work that includes drawings and sculptures. Marshall’s oeuvre recognizes the condition of invisibility long-ascribed to Black figures in Western pictorial tradition. With this in mind, the artist sets out to provide what he calls a “counter-archive” that brings these lost figures back into the narrative.
