The Evolution of Chinese Painting in the Twentieth Century

Chinese painting has been evolved and innovated over thousands of years by the elder generation, and gradually developed into different schools with their own features, and is a splendid star in the sky of art history. Stepping into 20th century, Chinese painting is facing new types of puzzles and problems. As a result of internal and external pressure, painters just started a new round of innovation leading to breakthrough. A number of painting masters, such as Zhang Daqian, Huang Binhong, Qi Baishi, Pan Tianshou and Fu Baoshi etc, opened a new era by inheriting tradition while making innovation and has rejuvenated the Chinese painting.

The lecture will theme on the Chinese Painting of 20th century, carding the historical process of its decline, innovation and evolution since the Qing Dynasty and tell about the painters’ hard efforts during that century.
