Imperial White Jade Seal Carved with “Chun Ou Zhai”

The jade seal belongs to the category of imperial seals. It has been identified as being in the personal use of the Qianlong Emperor. The white jade used is smooth and glossy. It is a square seal, with a knob featuring a vivid interlaced dragon. The dragon knob is depicted in an eloquent, meticulous, and naturalistic manner. The base is carved with three characters reading Chun Ou Zhai. Chun Ou Zhaiis located to the west of Fengze Garden in the Forbidden City. Ou” has the meaning of cultivation.  Chun Ou Zhai” is the resting place for the emperor during the cultivation ceremony, and it is also the study room for Qianlong in summer.
