Lianhuanhua, also known as serial-pictures, is a sequence of drawings telling a complete story or reappearing certain literary works. It is a kind of art form which is very popular and easy to understand among the public. Lu Xun once remarked in his Defense for Serial-Pictures that “...more than can be defined as art, it has already settled in the inner Palace of Art”.

The current exhibition displays a series of picture-story artworks in diversified styles. One of them called The Red Army Bridge is a paper-cut animation manuscript produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio in 1964. The story is adapted from Hunan folklore, integrating the Chinese traditional folk cultures of paper-cutting with shadow play and is well-featured with exaggerated and bold characters and intense time flavor. The fairy tales The Selfish Giant and The Happy Prince are written by the Irish writer Oscar Wilde (1854-1900). The edition of the picture-story book on show is illustrated by the painter Wang Xiangming, which vividly represents the connotation of the literary work with sprightly colors and innocent characters. A Rat’s Wedding and Brother Donkey, both drawn by Wu Guanying (1955- ), telling the audience philosophical folk tales through exaggerated and personified modeling. Golden Pumpkin& Sliver Bean, The Story of Yugong to Move the Mountains and Perseverance Will Prevail, illustrated by the older-generation artist Yang Yongqing (1928-2011) in the form of children's drawing, are all Chinese folklores which are widely known for a long time.
