An unexpected meet is called as an encounter, while an encounter implies that it is a meet by chance. As a proposition of philosophy, contingency has been explained and demonstrated time and again by both eastern and western philosophers and ideologists; or as an abstract narrative object, it has been written by writers and poets constantly. W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965), a British writer, once wrote "We are a haphazard bundle of inconsistent qualities". This exhibition presents the unexpected encounter of the works, by displaying the works of various artists in similar subjects or forms together or showing the works with the logics of daily experience in one space. The exhibition also encourages audience to connect their everyday experience to the aesthetic experience they may gained from this unexpected encounter with the artworks.

This exhibition displays over 30 private collection provided by Long Museum in four sections: Creatures, Four Seasons, Ensemble and We. The first section Creatures showing the works of different artists in similar subjects together, including the beings that full of mysteries, the fish as a symbol of original totem, the objects that have the shape of human beings, etc. The second section Four Seasons presenting the artists’ feelings and thoughts on the sceneries of all seasons. Instead of displaying the works in the order of spring, summer, autumn and winter, this section presenting the overlapping of the seasons. The third section Ensemble tries to discuss the structure and feelings of music written by Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951): "A variety of emotions accompany our understanding of a song, which is similar to the events that accompany our lives." by creating an afternoon concert circumstance for audience to walk in. In the fourth section We, some of works are the interpretation of the symbolic artists by younger artists, others are the stories between people in their ordinary life. When more than two people meet each other, their stories become our stories.

Recently, the whole world is under the shadow of the sudden outbreak of the epidemic disease. Although social distancing is separating people from each other for the moment, we still need to keep it in mind that the warm and hope we could gain from a little chance encounter. Jorge Luis Borges(1899-1986) wrote in The Garden of Forking Paths "This web of time……We do not exist in most of them. In some you exist and not I, while in others I do, and you do not, and in yet others both of us exist." We should give chances to unexpected moments, so that we can meet each other in a little chance encounter.
